Whales, Corals and Nature at Kepa Island
Kepa Island in Alor Regency in Indonesia’s East Nusa Tenggara is a great destination for divers as there are 42 diving spots around the island alone. As one of the “forgotten” virgin islands just off East Flores, you could really enjoy a remarkable underwater experience here with the mesmerizing marine life, crystal clear waters and untouched beach and savannahs.
It has been said that the corals around Kepa Island are the most beautiful corals in the world. The waters surrounding the island are part of a regular migratory route for whales as the area is a meeting point of the Timor Sea, Sawu Sea and the Flores Sea. If you’re lucky, you might just spot a whale or two as they appear on the ocean’s surface!
During your visit, you could swim, snorkel and dive. Please remember not to touch the marine life or litter. Kepa Island is beautiful as it is far removed from modern civilization which is why it remains untouched and pure. You could opt to stay on the island in a basic, simple yet delightful bamboo hut that is located on the cliffs overlooking the sea. Do bear in mind though, that the island only has 24 inhabitants, inadequate infrastructure, no asphalt roads or food stalls.
To get to Kepa Island, you could take a boat from Alor Island. To get to Alor Island, you will need to fly from Kupang and thereafter, journey another 1.5 hours to the pier to get to the boat that will take you to Kepa Island. Get ready for a truly rustic and authentic experience!
– Don’t expect modern amenities or luxuries
– Not for the faint-hearted, more for the adventurous and those who love nature
– Bring everything you need with you because you can’t buy them there
