The Souls of Lake Tiwu Sora
Tiwu Sora is a sacred lake to the locals who live in the area. Tiwu means “lake” in the Lio language and it is said that the souls of their ancestors depart earth and live in the lake in the form of giant eels when they pass on. So sacred is this lake that every single person passing through or coming near to the lake’s vicinity must go through a purification ritual conducted by a village elder.
Located in Deturia Village, Tiwu Sora is surrounded by untouched, breathtaking scenery. It is an amazing experience to be at one with nature while immersing oneself in such unique local culture and beliefs. The lake is easily reachable from Maumere with a 3-hour drive by car or motorbike. Once the driver drops you off, you have to start a 3-hour hike through incredible vegetation and open savannah where you’ll come across amazing plants like wild orchids, edelweiss, red berries, herds of wild horses and water buffaloes.
From Deturia Village, it is another hour’s hike to Tiwu Sora. You could stay the night, and live your most adventurous dreams as you enjoy some time with the locals and their unique way of life with local dance, music and ancient tales.
