The Secret Island of Pangabatang

If you’re in Flores and dreaming of exploring quiet, deserted and exotic islands that are way off the tourists’ radar, then you must visit Pangabatang Island. Easily accessible from Maumere, the capital city of Sikka, you can embark from Laurens Say Port for an easy one-hour boat journey to your very own “private island”.

Surrounded by crystal clear turquoise waters, Pangabatang Island is usually the destination of choice for those who crave a getaway from crowds and noise. It is a great option if you’re looking for an easy day-trip with a loved one or a trusted friend. To get to the island, you’ll need to rent a boat which would cost you about Rp 300,000 or more – the boat will drop you off and wait for you till you choose to return.

Pangabatang Island is largely unoccupied; there are only visitors and tourists there. It’s not too far from Pig Island or Pulau Babi, another great almost-deserted island for you to explore. While you’re there, you could just relax and forget about the hustle and bustle of modern life – swim, snorkel, suntan, nap and take a walk on the pristine beach.

Sunsets are amazing here so don’t miss it. You can’t stay on till dark though unless you’re planning to camp the night. There are no shops or restaurants here so bring your own food and water. Please remember to bring all your litter with you when you leave, and whatever you do, never ever throw any plastic cups, bottles, wrappers or any other litter into the sea. Please be a responsible traveller and keep Indonesia clean.
