The Beautiful Beaches
of Semau Island
If you’re a lover of beaches, you don’t need to travel far to find some of the most breathtaking beaches in the world – they are right here in Indonesia. With over 17,000 islands, you can take your time to find the beach of your dreams. Here in East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), there is a plethora of beautiful natural wonders to explore and one of them is Semau Island.
Located west of Kupang, the capital city of NTT, Semau island is easily reachable with an easy 30-minute ride by boat. The island is clean, quiet and pristine, away from the noise and stress of any big city. There’s only about 8,000 individuals living on the island, many of them are salt and seaweed farmers and fishermen. The beaches here are all blessed with sparkling white sands with clear turquoise waters, just like in the movies! Don’t forget to bring your cameras.
There are no accommodations in Semau Island. You can get there with a large wooden boat, from Tenau Port in Kupang. It’s great for a day trip with plenty of time to explore. Remember to bring along your motorbike from Kupang as there are no public transportations there at all and it will be hard to explore the island purely on foot.
Here are some places that you must visit if you’re headed to Semau Island:
Sparkling white sands with calm, blue water that is perfect for swimming in. You might spot some local women farming seaweed while you’re there.
Like a glimmering oasis, Uinian Beach is covered with tall, waving coconut trees. The waves can be rough so practice caution if you want to swim.
Another deserted beach on Semau Island, making you feel like you’re on your very own paradise island.
The views from this hill will astound you with an amazing panorama of Liman Beach and the breathtaking, limitless blue of the sky and the ocean. Sunsets here are said to be amazing.
