Strong 4.5 Earthquake Shakes East Flores

4.5 Magnitude Earthquake Hits East Flores

An earthquake registering at 4.5 magnitudes on the Richter scale recently hit East Flores, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) Indonesia causing residents to panic. The earthquake shook villages and towns for a few short seconds although residents reported that tremors were strongly felt.

Melki, a resident of Waibalun told that the tremors were strongly felt throughout his village and that a second earthquake took place right after the first series of shocks were felt. Another resident of Waibalun, Suban, said that he and his family ran out of their home, anticipating the worst.

The people of East Flores are still traumatized by the memory of the last deadly earthquake that hit East Flores in 1992, killing hundreds of people. There is also the fear of tsunami as many villages in East Flores were built to face the sea.

The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) in Kupang recorded the 4.5 magnitude earthquake which took place on Monday March 4th 2019, at 06.51.47 local time, at 8.13 south latitude and 122.95 east longitude, 20 kilometers northwest of East Flores at a depth of 24 km.

Owen Wahyu, Chief of BMKG Kampung Baru said that the earthquake did not pose any threats of tsunami.
