The Sano Nggoang Crater Lake is said to be one of the world’s deepest crater lakes, with a depth of 500m. It is located at an altitude of 750 meters above sea level. The crater lake offers various attractions including hiking, bird watching or relaxing in a natural hot spring.
Surrounding the Sano Nggoang Crater Lake is a gorgeous landscape of lush forests, dramatic hills, unique flora and mesmerizing fauna. A hotbed of biodiversity, the area is home to more than 20 rare and endangered birds such as Flores crow and Flores monarch. You might see some monkeys, hedgehogs or even a wild boar. Travellers come here to enjoy and explore the beautiful surroundings and serene atmosphere. Since there are no hotels in the neighbourhood, you will just hear the sounds of birds chirping in the background.
There are different possibilities when it comes to exploring the Sano Nggoang Crater Lake. You can either go by car or motorbike. Another option is to hire a local guide and hike towards the lake. There is a so called ‘eco route’ which will take you past little communities. For horse-lovers, you can also try riding along the shoreline.
A few meters from the lake, you can find two different hot springs, both with different temperatures. Wae Lua hot spring is not one you would want to swim in, with a temperature of 100 degrees. The other hot spring, Wae Bobok is actually known in the area for curing skin diseases.
