Komodo’s Bat Island

Kalong Island is located within the Komodo National Park – this island is not just any regular old island; it is home to thousands of bats that live within the island’s dense mangroves. Kalong means bats in the local language and many tourists are flocking to Kalong Island to view the bats when they take to the skies in thousands to hunt for food. Located between Rinca and Papagarang Island, the island is easily accessible from Labuan Bajo by speedboat within an hour’s journey. The best time to see the bats is just before sunset, feeding time! The bats will rise to the air in a massive cloud and fly out in search of fruits, nectar and flowers. If you’re planning to visit Kalong Island to witness this spectacular phenomenon, understand that you will be watching from your boat as the island is not accessible for humans. The mangrove forests are very dense and are located near the water. On the island, there is a large population of venomous snakes, not something that you would like to bump into! *Photo by Balitariisland.com
