Fulan Fehan Festival – Timor Island
27 & 28 October 2018
A yearly festival that takes place at the border of Indonesia and Timor Leste, the Fulan Fehan Festival highlights the cultural wonders and heritage of the district of Belu on the island of Timor in Nusa Tenggara Timur (NTT), Indonesia. Supported by the Indonesian Ministry of Education and Culture, the festival brings thousands of visitors and dancers together on the grasslands of Fulan Fehan at the foot of Mount Lakaan. The peak of the festival showcases a variety of traditional performances that are indigenous to the district of Belu, namely Tari Selendang, Tari Antama and Tari Likurai, a sacred warrior dance of the people of Timor where the male dancers bear swords and the female dancers carry small two-sided drums. The dance tells the tale of the people of Timor who bravely fought for independence from encroaching invaders during the colonial period. Tourism Minister Arief Yahya welcomed the initiative of the Belu regional government to encourage East Timorese tourists entering Indonesia. *Photo by Travel.Kompas.com
