Flores – Indonesia’s Next Big Thing
How did Flores receive its moniker as “Indonesia’s next big thing?” Just a few years ago, nobody’s heard of Labuan Bajo, the Komodo National Park, Mount Kelimutu or Flores! Well, we found this amazing article by the Financial Times that explains it all.
Written by John Aglion, the article gives us an in-depth look at How Indonesia’s Flores Began To Bloom. The author credited the internet for Wae Rebo’s rise to fame. Read more about Wae Rebo’s Drum Houses here.
He also mentioned that the now famous Mount Kelimutu and its tri-coloured crater lakes used to grace one of Indonesia’ banknotes and that the ferocious Komodo Dragons and the Komodo National Park received worldwide recognition for their roles in the James Bond film Skyfall.

The author goes on to describe Flores’s breathtaking and unimaginable beauty –
“Flores sits on the Pacific “Ring of Fire”, and Kelimutu is not its only volcano: some soar more than 2,000 metres above sea level. The seas lapping at its shores are home to turtles, dolphins and glorious carpets of brightly coloured coral reefs. And its rice terraces easily match their better-known rivals on Bali – in one valley near the town of Ruteng, they are arranged, for cultural reasons, in magnificent spiders’ webs.” – John Aglion, Financial Times
He also credited the power of Social Media to Flores’s steady rise to popularity as the next must-visit tourist destination.
