The PT ASDP Indonesia Ferry Company, Indonesia’s state-owned company which provides roll-on/roll-off ferry transport services, have closed down several ferry routes in Kupang, the capital city of East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) and parts of Flores due to bad weather, Detik News reports. The closure began on Sunday (5/1); routes will operate normally when the weather returns to normal.
According to the General Manager of PT ASDP Indonesia Ferry Kupang, Cuk Prayitno, there are six routes which are temporarily closed, including Kupang-Rote, Kupang-Hansisi, Kupang-Larantuka, Kalabahi (Alor)-Kupang, Larantuka-Solor-Lewoleba-Kupang, and Waingapu-Raijua-Sabu-Kupang.
“The closure is due to bad weather. We’re taking this step as a safety measure and to heed warnings by BMKG (The Meteorology and Geophysics Agency) who have issued warnings regarding extreme weather and high waves,” added Cuk Prayitno.
The ASDP Indonesia Ferry Company also had to close down the ferry routes in Flores’s Sikka regency, including the Kewapante-Pemana-Pulau Besar-Pemana-Kewapante routes. Cuk Prayitno added that the closure is temporary and the company and authorities monitor the weather with consideration related to technical matters.
The Kupang’s BMKG previously reported 1.25 to 5-meter-high waves occurring in the East Nusa Tenggara waters, including in northern Flores, the southern Sape Strait, the eastern Sumba Strait, the Ombai Strait, the Flores-Lamakera Strait and the Alor Strait.
