Tribute To A National Warrior, Ende
On your next visit to the Kelimutu National Park in Ende, Flores, you’ll definitely pass through Ende city where you might come across a statue of Ende’s very own national warrior – Mari Longa died protecting his people and homeland from encroaching Dutch colonialism in various battles that took place between 1898 and 1907. Born in 1855, he was a descendant of a long line of warriors and died during battle with the Dutch in 1907. He is very much respected and loved by all the people of Ende and a statue in his likeness was erected by the local people to commemorate his bravery and strength. Recently, a stadium was built and named after the national warrior; Stadium Marilonga is the site to many a glorious football matches. A street is also named after him. Also located nearby is the Wolowona Traditional Market, where travellers could purchase local products and farm-fresh produce, or simply mingle and observe the locals with their wares.
