Flores is one of Indonesia’s top 10 must-visit destinations. It is home to a myriad of unique and indigenous wildlife, flora and fauna. If you’re a fan of reptiles and coming to the Komodo National Park to see the Komodo Dragons, don’t miss visiting the Snake Palace or Istana Ular, which is located also in Labuan Bajo, West Manggarai.
Here at the Snake Palace, you’ll find serpents of all shapes and sizes; small, medium and large. The cave is also home to a colony of bats that hang to the roof of the cave in the thousands. Be careful when you enter as the floor is quite slippery from bat faeces. Right in front of the cave, there is a river that is used by the locals for irrigation and daily water source. If you’d like to visit this cave, be sure to hire a local tour guide as the terrain can be treacherous and there is always a risk of you getting lost within the cave.
The Snake Palace is located in Daleng, which is about 70 kilometres from Labuan Bajo. It will take approximately 2 hours to get there. The main entrance is located near a village in East Daleng and from there, you will still have to travel about 3 kilometres from the village to the entrance. Because the road is quite rough, you may have to walk part of the way.
