Sikka Natar is one of the most important and famous weaving centres in East Flores for the making of the Ikat. It is also one of the first places in Flores for Portuguese influence and Catholic missionary activities.
To learn more about the Sikkanese history and the colonial era, Sikka Natar is the best place to go to. In the centre of the Sikka village, there is a church built in1899 by Jesuit priests. The walls of the church are decorated with local Ikat motifs. In the old days, the church was used to hold inauguration of new kings.
While you’re there, you might be lucky enough to witness a captivating dance drama called the Toja Bobu – it was brought to Sikka by the Portuguese. Traditionally performed on the 26th of December every year, the dance drama depicts a beautiful princess who was being courted by many men who wanted to marry her. Unfortunately, this performance is very rarely held nowadays.
